PVC – Practical, Versatile, Cheap Assistive Technology Supports

Submitted by: Bridget MacDonald

This is a great site if you’re semi handy and want to save some money.  It shows you how to make your own assistive technology supports out of PVC pipe.  We made an eye gaze board that we use daily with our daughter – its great and cost next to nothing! There is also a dynavox stand, small and large switch stands and a toy bowling ball launcher.  This is just a few though, there’s a whole book of ideas!

Hanging Chaise Lounger Chair

heavy duty powder coated metal frame and all weather-resist fabric with a pillow, umbrella and cushion, supporting up to 265lbs. The modern design fits with any backyard decor. It comes with build-in 46″ canopy, and 2″ foam filled PVC coated polyester cushion with built-in pillow for extra comfort. It is also a great piece that allows you to sit back and enjoy the breeze in your backyard.

Beach Walker

We built her a  basic Walker from PVC and some stock “beach” wheels. I am sure she is not the only child that could benefit from such a device.

DIY Bath Chair

Wanted to share Avery DIY shower chair with everyone. It’s awesome to have macguyver at home! He cut the ends off the plastic chair. Made a PVC base and screwed the legs to the chair and then used a heat gun to shape the legs to take the pressure off.  I use the green stretch band around her chest and back of the chair and a piece of shelf liner on the seat so she doesn’t slide around. Works great and cost $20 instead of hundreds!!! He is going to add lockable wheels so we can use it outside the shower as a chair around the house.

Swim Diapers for up to 110 pounds
